Steel Mace, Indian Clubs and More

I love movement. I love to try new things. One of my strengths is my willingness to suck at things. This allows me to be open to trying things I’ve never done.

Earlier this year I wanted to try some new fitness classes. Because I live about an hour from any city I can’t commit to a weekly option. This led me to look for some private options. My search led me to Steel Mace Valkyrie in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Before my search I had never heard of steel mace workouts but was definitely intrigued.

My daughter agreed to come along with me to the class. We arrived at the studio run by Brandee Owens in the warehouse district of the city. Right away I liked Brandee. She is enthusiastic, friendly, and you can tell she loves what she does.

The class began with some warmups and working on mobility. Then, she introduced us to the Indian clubs. Indian clubs are weighted training tools that can be swung in patterns. They have origins in ancient India and Persia and have been in use for over 2000 years. Right away I knew I wanted my own.

Next Brandee guided us through techniques with the steel mace. The steel mace is a long metal bar with a weighted ball at one end. The studio had a range of weights to cater to different abilities. Brandee started us off with lighter options.

What I really noticed during the workout and for days after was how both the Indian clubs and steel mace worked my shoulders in ways I don’t generally work them. I also felt benefits in my core and spine.

As an instructor Brandee is exceptional. She observes her students and supports their needs with clear communication. My daughter and I had different needs during some of the exercises and she did an amazing job offering options that worked for each of our bodies. She’s also a fabulous cheerleader making everyone feel successful.

After class I immediately placed an order for my own steel mace and Indian clubs. If I lived in the city these classes would definitely be something I attended regularly.

The village I live in offers a range of programming and we’re hoping to have Brandee come out once a month for a few months.

Additionally, one of my goals is to continue exploring and playing with new ways to move my body. My plan is to try private classes at various places that offer different options. If you’re in Saskatchewan and open to traveling to Moose Jaw, Regina, or Saskatoon on a Saturday or Sunday to try a movement class let me know and I can add you to a list. When I have a private class booked I can let you know and you’d be welcome to join me.
